TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A small space heater causes a fire on Nashville Drive Sunday, sparking a close call for first responders.

Tallahassee fire crews responded to the fire just after 2:00 a.m. According to a statement from the fire department, crews were told there may have been a victim in the building. As firefighters aggressively searched for people inside, two responders suffered minor injuries. Crews eventually found out the building was empty when it ignited.

Heavy smoke and flames caused an estimated $50,000 in damage. The two injured firefighters were treated on scene and cleared to return to work.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, 79% of fire-related deaths happen because of misused or malfunctioning space heaters.
