CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - A beam from the World Trade Center will be added to a 9/11 memorial at the Kennedy Space Center.

Space center firefighters will fly to New York City Aug. 11 to pick up the steel beam. It will be placed atop scaled replicas of the twin towers outside the space station's fire station.

Florida Today reports that the memorial began as a collection of newspaper clipping pinned to a board to honor the firefighters who died in the terrorist attacks. The fire station decided to establish a more permanent memorial in 2011.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey awarded the beam to the space center early this year. It is scheduled to be installed Aug. 14.

Space center firefighters raised the money for the memorial.
