TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Southwood Community gathered Tuesday night to help put together baskets for the homeless.
Southwood Gives Back and the Kind Campaign Club prepared care packages with toiletries, snacks, and warm clothing to give to the Tallahassee-Leon Homeless Shelter. They put together nearly 200 packages.
Organizers, like Carrie Roane, director of Southwood Gives Back, say they've been doing this for seven years, and every year it becomes more and more important to them: "it's important to do it for the community because people at the shelter, they're just like me, they're just like you - just without a paycheck, just a little bit down on their luck there's no difference between them and us. They deserve to be treated like humans just like we are and we've got the kids involved in it the past couple of years to teach the kids how important it is to give back to the community."
the shelter currently houses about 270 people right now, and more come during the colder weather.
