DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL)- South Georgia is a well known place for quail hunting, and for those visiting.
Nestled along highway 27, south of Bainbridge is Southwind Plantation, a 2017 Orvis wingshooting lodge of the year.
"The plantation consists of about 6000 acres of hunting land. Quail hunting is our main specialty," said Tim Smith, owner of Southwind Plantation. We have clay shooting. We have corporate events. We have weddings. We have a little bit of everything.
Many hunting guests are visitors to the area, who come out for a good time, and leave with so much more.
"They come every year. People come hunting every year. We have groups, as I told you earlier, we named the "Bub Smith" lodge after a group from Amarillo, Texas that's been coming for 15 years in a row," said Smith.
For Decatur County, Southwind Plantation is more than just a popular hunting and fishing lodge. Those who visit spend money in Decatur County and help the area grow.
"The owner at Southwind is a real community minded person. If he sees somebody that comes in and they're talking about possibly relocating or liking the area, he'll try to hook us up. That has been real fruitful for us," said Rick McCaskill, Executive Director of Development Authority.
Aside from the quail hunting, Southwind Plantation offers bass fishing, dinner during the summer, and a truly family feel for anyone who visits.
Southwind Plantation has been open to the public for the last 19 years.
