BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WTXL) - Bainbridge residents and leaders discussed solving the Flint River's sewage spill problem and how to keep the river clean.

In Albany, Georgia, since January 1, there have been eight moderate to major sewage spills into the Flint River.

While some downstream counties, such as Decatur County, have not seen any damage from these spills, according to the Flint Riverkeeper executive director, they are having meetings to prevent that scenario from ever happening.

"The importance of the meeting is the help demonstrate that we can solve these sorts of problems as communities without litigation," said Gordon Rogers, executive director of Flint Riverkeeper. "We don't want to go the lawsuit stage. We want to go ahead and catch now before it gets worse."

Sewage spills in rivers can cause diseases, lead to infections, and even death.

Another meeting will be held Tuesday night at 6:30 in Albany.
