SOPCHOPPY, Fla. (WTXL) - One Florida city is receiving a big grant from the state to create new jobs
Sopchoppy is small and quaint. And Mayor Lara Edwards says that even with the money from a state grant, that won't change.
Sopchoppy is one of 11 cities across the Sunshine State and the only city in the Big Bend to be awarded the Competitive Florida Partnership Grant.
The grant allows the cities to work alongside the Department of Economic Opportunity to identify areas of growth and ways to propel the local economy.
"We don't want to make our city bigger. We like being a small city. But we want to improve what makes us unique," said Mayor Edwards. "So we want to be able to provide more assistance to our existing businesses, some of our amazing local businesses, and then be able to improve some of our historic buildings and areas in our downtown that would be viable commercial spaces for anybody looking to bring a business into Sopchoppy."
Mayor Edwards says the city is also looking at ways to increase tourism and get more people stopping into the small town just to see all that it has to offer.
