LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Leon County local sales tax has helped fund a number of projects like cascades park, the renovation of Franklin Boulevard, and the Martha Wellman Park.
At Pineview Elementary School where local residents are talking about concerns regarding this project.
It's known as the Airport Gateway Project, and it will help improve the roads leading from the airport into town.
The original version of this project was only focused on one three mile stretch of road and cost the taxpayers 58 million dollars, which has been collected from this local sales tax.
The modified plan adds about 4 miles of roadway near both FSU and FAMU, and would cost over 70 million dollars, 58 million still from taxpayers, and the last 21 million from FSU and FDOT.
Of course, with road improvements comes some concerns.
Meetings like the ones held today and earlier for this project help project planners get an idea of what the community wants.
"We've gotten feedback from businesses and residents alike. A lot of people are concerned about increased traffic through neighborhoods. I'd say that's probably the number one concern that's come from the residential areas. We've also gotten support on the project from the business; the tallahassee chamber of commerce has supported this project. I think that's mainly because it's providing access to the international airport," says Autumn Calder, the Planning Manager of Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency.
It's thought that by investing in the community's infrastructure with these improvements that others will also invest in the community and help it grow and thrive.
