FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia-based soldier aims to set a record and motivate veterans by running 100 miles straight while wearing a gas mask that restricts his oxygen intake.
The Savannah Morning News reports (bit.ly/1Th8wsV) that Sgt. 1st Class Augusto "Tito" Piñeiro will attempt the quest Friday in Greenville, South Carolina.
The soldier in the black Special Operations gas mask is often seen training on a Georgia highway on Saturday mornings.
He goes by "Unbreakable."
Piñeiro says the attempt is partly a tribute to a friend, a Navy SEAL who was killed in action. The Savannah newspaper reports that the two buddies had pledged to one day run 100 miles together wearing gas masks.
Piñeiro is a 3rd Infantry Division soldier based at Georgia's Fort Stewart Army base.
