VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - One Valdosta community is concerned about the well-being of its children and pets after hearing that non-venomous snakes could have been let loose in the neighborhood.
Homeowners in the Wood Valley Subdivision said they have spotted over a dozen snakes in their yards, pools and in the streets of their neighborhood.
The Department of Natural Resources confirmed that it was called to the area to remove some illegal snakes from a home.
"We do know that there were some illegal snakes that you are not allowed to own in the state of Georgia. And we did confiscate those and confiscate them safely, but the ones that were released, we believe were released before the search warrant was executed," stated Mark McKinnon with the DNR.
McKinnon said the snakes are not a danger to the public. But even so, some community members said they want them out.
"They need to confiscate them, get rid of them, something. But they do not need to stay in our neighborhood, because they will multiply and make many more and that will be dangerous to us," said a neighbor that wanted to remain anonymous.
Lowndes County sent out a message to community members who have the Code Red app downloaded to their phones, alerting people of possible venomous snakes being removed from the area.
The DNR reiterated that the snakes are not dangerous, but community members should not interact with them and should call authorities immediately for removal.
