VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) - South Georgia Medical Center's stroke program was given a statewide recognition.

The team was named the Coverdell Champion Hospital of the Year by Georgia Coverdell Acute Stroke Registry.

The award goes to one hospital in each size category and winners are selected based on those who score best in nationally accepted best practices. This is the team's third award from GCASR in a row.

The group was also recognized for their fast response time as they were one of four in the entire state to average less than 45 minutes from a patient getting to the hospital to getting medication.

The SGMC Stroke Program, now in its 5th year, began in 2011.

Among other awards awarded to the group include being named as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care.

The Coverdell Champion Hospital of the Year award is in honor of the late Senator Paul Coverdell of Georgia.

Coverdell died of a stroke in 2000. These awards add to GCASR's effort to improve hospital care to stroke patients.
