TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A recent report says the number of registered sexual offenders and predators living in Florida has risen by more than 50 percent over the last 13 years.
Legislative auditors reported that almost 29,000 sex offenders and predators now reside in the state.
Bob Rumbley, Director of CARE Tallahassee, said that number could possibly be skewed since there are more people in Florida and more people are reporting sex crimes that weren't years ago.
"Our society is becoming more aware of sex crimes that weren't reported within families units and things like that, and then also they are expanding the horizon on sexual offenders like lewd and lascivious," said Rumbley.
Rumbly said that a FSU report done with CARE Tallahassee reports that only about 1.6 percent of men who went in to the CARE program committed another sex crime.
