THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL)--Seniors in Thomas County are sharing their interactions with scammers in hopes of keeping others from becoming victims.

"That's scary and at my age I can't afford something like that," said Donna Hanyecz.

Hanyecz knew something wasn't right when she got a call from a person telling her she needed to her Medicare card replaced.

"Why would I need a new Medicare card," said Hanyecz. "He said we need information on your banking and right away I said no, no, no and hung up."

The scammers called three times but donna and her husband didn't fall for it. Now they're urging others to be just as cautious.

"Just be aware of what's going on around you," said Hanyecz. "Know you have to think twice before answering any personal questions."

Law enforcers say they come across scams all the time but the crooks are hard to catch.

"Once your money is out there you can't get it back," said Thomasville Police Lt. Eric Hampton. "Like I said it's hard to contact these people it's hard to run them down."

The Florida Department of Elder Affairs considers scams as a form of abuse.

They say one in 14 cases go unreported across the nation.

They say if you think you've been scammed call the elder abuse hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE.
