TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Social media has played a big part in this year's presidential race. But, it can get voters in trouble if they aren't careful.

What's been causing all the trouble is ballot selfies which are illegal in both Georgia and Florida, the laws stating that people cannot post a picture of their filled-in ballots online.

Officials said that it is illegal because the voting process is supposed to be a secret and revealing who you've chosen makes that private decision public.

But some voters argue that the choice to share who you've selected should be up to you without the fear of penalty.

Officials said however, that it is legal to post a picture of your empty ballot as long as no candidates have been selected.

As of now, posting a selfie with your completed ballot is legal in only 17 states.
