MIAMI (AP) — Two brothers accused of plotting to detonate bombs in New York City are due in Miami federal court for a hearing on whether they have a right to see evidence from secret U.S. surveillance programs.
Lawyers for Pakistani-born Raees and Sheheryar Alam Qazi insist they should be allowed to see any such evidence. Prosecutors say the brothers only have that right if the evidence will be used against them at trial, which in this case it will not.
U.S. District Judge Robert Scola is holding a hearing Monday on the contentious issue, which has also surfaced in a Chicago terrorism case.
The Qazi brothers have pleaded not guilty to several terror-related charges. Authorities say they plotted to blow up New York landmarks to avenge deaths overseas from U.S. drones.
