TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) -- A second wildfire sparked by lightning is now 60 percent contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.
The Powerline Bay Fire began Tuesday around 5 p.m. and now covers 128 acres. Fire crews say it spread quickly because dense vegetation made getting to the fire difficult with dozers.
Crews used a helicopter and fixed wing aircraft to attack the fire.
This is the second fire caused by a lightning strike in the area. The Tide Swamp Fire is 75% contained and so far has burned 1032 acres.
“Florida’s wildland firefighters will likely battle additional wildfires in the coming weeks due to dry conditions and increased lightning activity,” said Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam. “Citizens can do their part by keeping preventable human-caused wildfires at bay and preparing their families and homes for wildfire.”
Some tips they ask citizens to follow are below:
· Develop and implement a family wildfire action plan.
· Call 911 or a local Florida Forest Service field unit office immediately in the event of a wildfire.
· Obey Florida’s outdoor burning laws.
· Never burn on windy days.
· Never leave an outdoor fire or hot grill unattended.
· Keep a shovel and water hose handy in case the fire breaks containment.
