School Threats: Serious consequences may await offenders

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - School safety is on everyone’s mind lately due to last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Wednesday, while hundreds of students were rallying for better gun control in schools, others were being arrested across the country for making threats to schools.

Three of these students were Tallahassee teens. Leon County Schools has suspended all three students and is recommending that they all be expelled.

But are these students’ actions punishable by law?

Well, according to Florida law, it’s a second degree felony to write a letter or use electronic communications to threaten bodily harm or death to an individual or their family.

With many of these recent threats being geared toward schools and not a specific individual, we'll have to wait and see whether these cases go to court.

No matter the punishment, threats like this not only disrupt the school, but also disrupt the entire county.

"When threats like this are made, we don't have a choice but to follow up and investigate and try to find out in order to keep our kids safe," Leon County Sheriff's Officer, Lieutenant Grady Jordan said. "If there's one threat that was made that we didn't get followed up on and that person went forward with that threat and did something, then we would be second guessing ourselves forever."
