DECATUR COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - After Hurricane Michael hit much of Southwest Georgia, people are learning to adjust to their 'new normal' and work through the storm's after math.
School officials in Decatur County, are finding new ways to teach their students, because not all facilities are usable.
School leaders told us that most of the Decatur County schools received some type of damage from Hurricane Michael.
They said Potter Street Elementary suffered the most damage with the gym roof being completely destroyed. So, students that have class in the gym, currently cannot use that space.
Superintendent Tim Cochran said they're working around this problem by using mobile units to teach the students.
"We had a couple classrooms in that gym that had to be moved," said Cochran. "So, those mobile units are used to store students that typically would've been in that gym that can't be in the gym due to us repairing the roof."
Cochran stated the gym will be unusable until at least March. He also said all the damage the district schools received from the storm totals to a couple million dollars.
Cochran added they're still working to pick up storm debris, but it's mostly in areas that aren't frequently used.
