TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee Police are warning residents after receiving reports about scam calls impersonating officers by spoofing TPD's number.
TPD has been receiving complaints about an officer impersonation scam.
They say the scammer claims to be an officer during the calls and has even spoofed TPD's main number in an effort to look like the real deal. Spoofing is a fraudulent or malicious practice in which communication is sent from an unknown source disguised as a source known to the receiver.
TPD says they will never call anyone demanding money or a payment in any form. If you have doubts about the call, hang up and call TPD at 850-891-4200.
If you have any questions about a phone call where the caller is demanding money or payment and suspect it's a scam, you are asked to call TPD and report it to the Federal Trade Commission.
