LEON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The severe weather brought on by Tropical Storm Cindy is prompting those in Leon County to prepare for possible flooding.

One way to get ready is filling up sandbags.

On Wednesday, WTXL headed to Tekesta Park, one of four locations the county opened for sandbag filling.

One way to close sandbags is to create a bundle at the top of the bag and tie the drawstrings around it. Another way is to leave the bags unsealed and lay them in a row, using the weight of one bag to seal the one before it.

County officials say giving residents these resources is critical in times of severe weather.

"The design for the sandbags is to help prevent water from getting under doors and into your home -- whether it's a front door, side or back door, or your garage door," said Kevin Peters, the emergency management director of Leon County. "The goal is to be able to separate the water from the cracks under the doors. You're not going to be able to protect a home from a full-on flood. You can't build a wall of sandbags with what's provided, but it will keep the water diverted away from those areas where water could seep under doors."

The sandbag locations have closed for the day and the county plans to clear the sites Thursday because weather conditions are expected to improve.
