CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Police say they are responding to an active shooter situation in downtown Charleston.
Police spokesman Charles Francis says King Street is blocked off between Calhoun and Morris to both motorists and pedestrians because of an "active shooter" situation within the 400 block of King Street.
Police are asking people to avoid the area, Francis said.
Dispatchers say a weapon is involved, but police have not yet provided specific details.
Images from the scene show police and SWAT officers with guns drawn and a shattered front door of the Virginia's on King restaurant.
It is not yet clear whether any injuries are involved.
Witnesses said at approximately 12:30 p.m. Charleston Police were blocking off a section of King Street.
