TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Republican Sen. Marco Rubio has told faith leaders in Orlando that they must love LBGT people and accept them into the church, even if the pastors stay firm in their belief that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
Rubio spoke Friday, a day after protesters condemned his plans to attend the Pastors & Pews conference, which they said featured anti-gay speakers.
Rubio said U.S. history has been marred by discrimination and rejection of gays and lesbians. He said some in the LGBT community have felt shunned by Christians.
He said if anyone, himself included, has made LGBT people feel Christianity doesn't want anything to do with them, then they have failed to live the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Rubio is running for re-election after a failed presidential run.
