ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP) - Robins Air Force Base officials say hundreds of crew spent the day helping to clean up and inspect the area after a tornado and severe thunderstorm hit central Georgia last week.
Officials said in a release that crew members on Monday were looking for any debris that could damage aircraft. Officials said larger debris after the storm on Friday had been picked up and disposed of over the weekend.
Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Quality Assurance Chief Tony Larkin says those who helped remove debris found metal screws that high winds had blown out of roofs at the base.
The installation's foreign object damage manager Steve Schwarz says inspecting for potentially harmful materials after storms is critical because damage from foreign objects can cost thousands or millions of dollars.
