TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A Rickards High School student received a big honor Wednesday with the potential to change his life for years to come.

Cadet Roy Cherry was presented with an Army ROTC scholarship, that will allow him to study for three years at FAMU, free of cost.

Cherry says without the scholarship, college would not have been possible for him.

He was already enlisted in the Army, and now will be able to join later at a higher rank thanks to the scholarship opportunity.

"If I'd just went straight in, I wouldn't have has as many leadership opportunities that I do have. But now, I have the opportunity to lead more people, do more things, effect more lives. That's always good," said Cherry.

The ROTC says they picked Cadet Cherry because he's exactly the kind of student they're looking for.

Cherry is in the top 15% of his class and his teachers say he not only holds leadership positions in ROTC but is a leader in his community as well.
