GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Restoring Families Program held a coat drive at the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office Monday.
Nearly 90 Stewart Street Elementary students came to pick up winter jackets.
Restoring families is a program that focuses on young kids with parents who have been incarcerated and aims to teach skills to keep them out of the system. With cold weather around the corner, the Gadsden County alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority donated coats to kids in the program.
The goal of the program is to divert youth away from the juvenile justice system. The Department of Juvenile Justice awarded a grant to the Gadsden County Sheriff's Office on August 1st to provide prevention services for kids in the program.
Children with incarcerated parents have a 65 percent chance of becoming incarcerated themselves.
The program offers a youth service plan, education counseling support, life coaching and social support.
Kids in the program meet daily with their life coach.
Students were excited and thankful as they tried on their winter coats. And Monday's event was just one way to give back to the families in the restoring families program.
