TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A local organization that helps the homeless in the capital city, hosted an event to honor and pay respect to those who died as they experienced homelessness, within the past year.
Residents gathered at the Kearney Center in Tallahassee and remembered more than 20 homeless that died.
Today is National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.
And tonight many fought back tears while sharing heartfelt stories about their passed love ones.
One man who was previously homeless, went to the ceremony and shared his remarks about the people he encountered and the people he lost.
He thanks the Kearney Center for all the help but says, the number of people celebrated today, could have been bigger.
"We give a memory out to everybody to let them know that though we have lost them we still care about them and to celebrate who they were, because if it was for the people here there would be the number would be bigger," said Michael Gavin.
Gavin adds, it's nice the community of Tallahassee came together to remember those that died.
