TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Two Republican candidates are set to face off in Florida's special election in April to fill the open District 7 seat in the Florida House of Representatives, but candidates have another week to enter the race.
Both Jason Shoaf and Mike Watkins hope to fill the vacancy Halsey Beshears left.
District 7 only impacts five precincts in Southwest Leon County. Supervisor of Elections in Leon County, Mark Earley, says election guides will be coming out in March. One week of early voting starts March 30 at all locations.
"Turnouts in these elections are usually relatively low. We have a history of high turnouts in Leon County, so we would like to see our voters turn our strong. It's an important election," said Earley. "House 7 is one of the representative seats for our area. The more our county citizens go out and vote, the better their voice will be heard."
The primary special election is on April 9. The winner will advance to a June 18 election and run against Ryan Terrell.
