(WTXL) - A person who is walking is most likely to be hit and killed by a driver in Florida, according to a new report.
According to a newly released study from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Street Coalition, Florida is the deadliest state in the U.S. for pedestrians.
Eight of the 10 deadliest cities for U.S. pedestrians are in Florida, with the Orlando area taking the no. 1 spot.
Between 2008 and 2017, the study says drivers hit and killed 49,340 people while they were walking throughout the United States. That’s more than 13 people per day, or one person every hour and 46 minutes.
"It’s the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of people dying every single month," the report says.
According to the report, nearly 5,500 people were hit and killed by cars in Florida from 2008 to 2017. Despite people walking less and driving slightly more, significantly more people were hit and killed between 2008-2017.
"This is happening because our streets, which we designed for the movement of vehicles, have not changed. In fact, we are continuing to design streets that are dangerous for all people," the report says. "Furthermore, federal and state policies, standards, and funding mechanisms still produce roads that prioritize high speeds for cars over safety for all people."
