A report from the Journal on Cancer Policy said cancers caused by the use of tanning beds cost $343.1 million in medical care costs in 2015 alone. The report goes on to say the cost of early deaths top $127.3 billion when you factor in all the various long term costs of those affected.
In 2015 there were 263,000 cases of skin cancer linked back to the use of tanning beds. Researchers behind the report called the use of the beds a "significant contributor to illness and premature mortality in the US."
The link between skin cancer and the use of tanning beds has been around for years. But if you think those years of warnings would be a deterrent, think again.
Reuters news agency reports some 30 million people use tanning beds in the US alone each year.
A study done at the University of Alabama found women younger than 30 are six times more likely to develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime if they tan indoors.
