TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Family and friends gathered to remember Tallahassee Fire Department's first black firefighter on Friday.

Friends and family of Ernest Adams came out to Meridian Woods Church of Christ to celebrate his life.

The service was completed packed with people remembering him and singing his favorite songs.

Adams first joined TFD in 1971, retiring in 1997.

One firefighter says just attending his memorial is an honor.

"I'm standing on Chief Adams shoulders. If it weren't for him and other gentlemen like him, I wouldn't be at the fire department now and have the opportunity that I have now if it were not for the people like him," said Lt. Warren Bowers with TFD.

Adams is now buried at the Tallahassee National Cemetary.
