CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. -- Three people are dead and another is seriously hurt following a two-car wreck in Citrus County Tuesday afternoon.

State troopers responded to a call of a multiple-vehicle crash on County Road 518 near East Amy Lane around 1 p.m. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota SUV was traveling north on CR 581 and a Kia sedan was traveling south on the same county road.

The driver of the Toyota attempted to pass other traffic in a no-passing zone, entered the southbound lane and collided head-on with the Kia. After the crash, the Toyota came to rest within the roadway and caught fire as the Kia rotated to final rest along the shoulder of the road.

The crash killed the driver, 62-year-old Amalia Gomara, of Hialeah, and two passengers, 85-year-old Nilda Cordovi and 86-year-old Clara Gorrin, inside the Kia.

The driver of the Toyota sedan suffered serious injuries. So far, no charges have been formally announced but FHP said charges may be pending.
