TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - With New Years resolutions in full swing, it makes sense that January would be the busiest time of the year for Floridians to join a gym. However, before working out, it's important to be aware of what kind of gym membership contract you're signing.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says that they have dealt with cases where gym memberships have gone haywire, and they have provided tips to make sure that the only thing you have to worry about is what time you're going to hit the gym:
- Make sure the gym is currently registered with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
- Contact the consumer protection and information hotline by calling 1-800-FL-AYUDA (352-9832) to see if any complaints have been filed against the gym, and if so, how they have been resolved.
- If long-term memberships are offered, the contract must contain provisions allowing the contract to be canceled within three business days, excluding weekends and legal holidays.
- If a gym closes or moves its facilities more than five miles away, it must provide access to an alternate facility of equal quality within five miles of its original location at no additional cost to its members.
