TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - This year WTXL will again partner with Second Harvest of the Big Bend for the 3rd Annual WTXL Turkey Drive and our goal for this year is, "16k for 16."
We are about a month away from Thanksgiving, a time best spent with family and friends. But for many throughout the area a Thanksgiving meal is not a certainty.
For that reason, WTXL will host our 3rd Annual WTXL Turkey Drive on Nov. 17th at Ponce DeLeon Park. People will be able to drop of turkeys, cash, and checks without even getting out of their cars.
For many, Thanksgiving is a time for family, fun, and food. But for 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 4 children in the Big Bend, there likely will be no turkey to gather around come Thanksgiving Day.
Eliminating what is officially called 'food insecurity' is what Second Harvest is all about.
Just this past year alone they have distributed 6.5 million pounds of food which is enough for 5.2 million meals. And it's a cause we're hoping to continue with the WTXL Turkey Drive 16k for 16.
In it's inaugural year back in 2014 with cash donations and turkey's, the Second Harvest of the Big Bend was able to provide over 14,000 meals. Last year, that number went up to 45,000 meals.
It's giving back made simple with an impact that's anything but.
