VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Valdosta city officials are asking people to avoid local waterways after heavy rain led to more than 591,000 gallons in wastewater spills.
Officials say three inches of rain fell in the south Georgia city between Wednesday night and Thursday morning and led to sewer overflows.
Officials say 311,250 gallons of wastewater flowed into the One Mile Branch Creek, and two overflows led to more than 159,000 gallons of wastewater spilling into Sugar Creek. Other impacted waterways include a Knights Creek tributary, Two Mile Branch Creek and the Withlacoochee River.
City officials say the overflows have been stopped and warning signs have been posted downstream from the impacted areas. Officials say they're sampling affected waterways and have notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the local health department.
