QUINCY, Fla. (WTXL) - Loved ones are remembering an elderly couple killed in a house fire in Quincy.
Charlie Mae Allen Reed and Leroy Reed were in their late seventies, living a quiet community called "Shiloh."
Imagine sitting in church receiving tragic news over the phone. That's what happened to one woman in Tampa, learning that the Quincy home of her grandparents was on fire.
The home on Shiloh Road sustained significant damage and the grandparents didn't make it out.
The Quincy Fire Department was out Monday morning as smoke re-emerged from the back. Crews were able to cool it off.
Several family members have come here as well, seeking emotional support from each other. Many of them opted not to go on camera. WTXL spoke to one granddaughter who said the brother of the woman who died went inside the house to try to save the couple, but he was unsuccessful.
The granddaughter said the two were pillars of the community.
"My grandmother has been living here forever," said Shae Allen. "The fact that she has the house on the hill -- everyone in this community knows who my grandmother and who my granddad are, so it's just hard, you know."
The granddaughter says through social media, she's received support from family members she never even knew she had -- a tragedy to hit this small community.
