TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - As part of Florida A&M University's star-studded Homecoming, Pulitzer Prize winner Garry Pierre-Pierre came out and spoke to Florida A&M University students about Haiti's struggles before and after Hurricane Matthew.

FAMU alumnus Garry Pierre-Pierre, Pulitzer prize winner and founder and publisher of the Haitian Times, told students that the effects of Hurricane Matthew are being felt in Haiti now as much as ever.

He was invited by the dean to share his experiences in Haiti with students.

Pierre-Pierre also spoke with students Thursday about how the problems in Haiti don't being or end at Hurricane Matthew.

"It's a tragedy yes, but I think it's not a natural disaster its a man-made disaster. There's been decades of systemic environmental degradation that hasn't been addressed and hence every time we have a natural disaster it takes into biblical proportions of Haiti and that has to stop," Pierre-Pierre asserted.

He added that real change in Haiti has to start not only with the Haitian government, but with governments across the globe.
