TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ( The News Service of Florida) - Two Republican lawmakers are seeking to make permanent a pilot program that helps foster children get driver's licenses and auto insurance.
Rep. Jennifer Sullivan, R-Mount Dora, filed the House version of the proposal (HB 217) on Wednesday, about a month after Sen. Aaron Bean, R-Fernandina Beach, filed a similar measure (SB 60).
The bills, which will be considered during the legislative session that starts March 7, is an outgrowth of a 2014 law aimed at helping foster children gain independence and have experiences, such as driving, similar to their peers.
The 2014 law created a three-year pilot program to pay for driver education, licenses and auto insurance for foster children.
Sullivan and Bean want to make the program permanent.
