(WAAY) - A Canadian college professor says The Elf on the Shelf prepares children to accept life in a "surveillance state."
Dr. Laura Pinto is a digital technology professor at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. She argues the best selling children's book "The Elf on the Shelf" teaches children it's OK for people to spy on them.
The book, which comes with a doll, tells the story of an elf who watches children and tells Santa Claus how they behave.
Pinto is concerned if children think it's OK for an elf to watch them, they won't have a problem with the NSA watching them and reporting back to the government.
She believes it could prepare children to live in "a police state," with no privacy.
Huffintonpost.com has an interesting interview with her, where she explains more of her concerns here.
