MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) - 350 pounds of unused prescription medication has been dropped off at the Moultrie Police Department.

Police are reporting good success with their new medication drop box at their department.

Sergeant David Underwood says the pills range from multi-vitamins to over-the-counter prescriptions.

"The whole idea is to keep the medications and whatever else is in there out of the hands of someone that it could harm," said Underwood.

Underwood says they prefer you to not put needles in the drop box, but if you do make sure it's inside a container.

"We don't like loose pills, they need to be in some kind of container that will keep them from falling all over inside the drug drop box," said Underwood.

Once they've collected the desired amount they box up all the medications and take it to an industrial facility to be incinerated.

"Take a forklift and raise it up and drop it on down, and it probably takes 10 minutes," said Underwood.

Underwood says you can come by the Moultrie Police Department anytime to drop off your unused or expired medicine in the lobby at their office on 1st Street Southwest.
