VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - A Valdosta Police Department traffic sergeant says prescription drugs are becoming the leading cause of DUI cases.
Sergeant J.B. Jones says that VPD has not experienced any change in the numbers of DUIs it handles.
Jones says people would be surprised that it's not alcohol that's impairing drivers.
He says that just one slip up with prescribed medicine can cause a lot of trouble, time and money. He says it could it could take months for a case to go to trial.
The court costs could be anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. A loss of license is almost guaranteed, and in some cases, people could lose their job.
Pay attention to how you feel, Jones said, because the body will alert you that you're being affected by a drug.
Jones says people should always consult with a physian, and he suggests that people taking a prescription carefully read the labels to avoid finding themselves in a bad situation.
