TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- Smoke on the horizon is no cause for concern in Leon County, as a 1,692 acre portion of the Apalachicola National Forest is subject to prescribed burning Saturday.
The burns have off-road vehicle trails shut down on Highway 267 near Forest Road 367. Those trails should re-open on Sunday.
Prescribed burning helps to eliminate brush and vegetation that builds up on the forest floor, creating a bed of fuel for potential wildfires. Burns like this one, experts say, improve wildlife habitat and help to reduce the severity and threat of wild land fires.
Fire managers are warning motorists to be aware of the potentially smokey conditions. They say travelers should drive slowly with their headlights on.
