(WWSB) – Many people have children and child proof their home but what about making your home safe for your pet?
There are many dangerous items that possibly exist in your home… some edible and some non-edible.
The FDA created lists of some possible dangers for your pets that you might have in your home.
Some edible dangers include:
- Alcoholic drinks and food products containing alcohol
- Avocado
- Caffeine
- Chocolate
- Garlic
- Grapes and raisins
- Macadamia nuts
- Marijuana
- Onions
- Yeast products (like raw bread dough)
- Tobacco products
The FDA says, “While not necessarily toxic, some food items can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction (a blockage in the digestive tract) if your pet swallows them.”
Some non-edible dangers include:
- Antifreeze
- Fabric softener sheets
- Ice melting products
- Insecticides
- Liquid potpourri
- Rat and mouse bait
- Various household cleaners (including bleach and toilet bowl cleaners)
- Swimming pool chemicals
- Play dough
Also, with spring here, you might be taking your pet outside more. Watch out for harmful plants and flowers that include:
- Aloe Vera
- Chrysanthemums
- Daphne
- Daylilies
- Dogbane
- Foxglove
- Gloriosa lily
- Kalanchoe
- Lily-of-the-Valley
- Mountain Laurel
- Oleander
- Poinsettia
- Rhododendron
- Rosary pea
- Stinging nettle
