VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL)-- The Valdosta Fire Department is asking you to keep safety in mind while the colder temperatures hit.
If you're using a portable propane heater, make sure to follow the manufacturer's guidelines. These heaters have the potential to cause fires.
Portable propane heaters are designed to be used only in a well-ventilated or outside area to prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide.
In addition, the propane bottles attached to the heaters may explode during a fire, causing severe injuries or death.
The Fire Chief says you should be sure your heating units-including central heating systems-are serviced regularly by a licensed provider and are working safely before use. Heating with equipment that has not been properly serviced or maintained, or that is being used improperly, is a common cause of house fires during the winter months.
