TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Jackie Pons is one step closer to another term as Leon County superintendent.
Tuesday night, he was greeted by a number of supporters at a watch party on Market Street.
Pons said he wasn't even sure he was going to run for another term, but after talking with his family, they convinced him to run one more time.
He thanked the community for their support and said he looks forward to the general election in November.
"Our community is speaking out about how they feel about our school system," Pons said. "They believe in this school system. It's not about me. It's about our system. We got the best school system in the state and the best teachers in the nation, and our community really sent a strong message tonight that they like our school system. I just thank each and every voter that got out and participated in the process -- those that voted for us, those that didn't -- but thank you for participating. We live in a great town, great city. It's an exciting night for me and my family."
Pons said, if elected in November, he wants to focus more on security in schools by adding more funding for school resource officers. He said he also wants to make sure academics stay up to par.
Pons will face off against three other candidates in November, including Rocky Hanna, who was not listed on the primary ballot, because he has no political affiliation.
