TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Many have mixed reactions after the United States launched missiles in Syria overnight.
President Donald Trump unexpectedly changed his approach to Assad's regime, launching 59 tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian airfield.
Before the airstrike, Trump was against military action aimed at Assad's forces.
Many high-ranking Republicans and Democrats support the action, while local political experts warn of the potential consequences.
Local leaders on both sides of the aisle are also speaking out, releasing strong statements on the airstrikes.
Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, as part of his run for governor, said in part: "We must not lose sight of the more than 5 million Syrian refugees who are fleeing a violent civil war. We must welcome them with open arms into our communities."
Part of Governor Rick Scott's statement focuses on the airstrikes themselves:
He says, "President Trump took the right action and acted decisively. These chemical attacks against innocent Syrian people are sickening and it's about time someone stood up for them."
