TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Police say after investigating the Thursday morning shooting near Lake Ella, they discovered the man took his own life and was not shot by officers.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department, officers were called out to a home near Lake Ella Thursday morning around 4:50 a.m. after 911 caller said there was a man outside with a gun, threatening to take his own life.

That man was later identified as 36-year-old Patrick Keeney.

Police say when officers arrived, Keeney and Tallahassee Police Officer Douglas Kutchera both fired their weapons. Department officials say they are still investigating who fired first.

TPD says Officer Kutchera's bullet was recovered from an object and that Keeney's bullet was the fatal shot.

Officer Kutchera and Officer Matthew Smidt gave Keeney CPR and called EMS but he could not be revived, said TPD in an afternoon news conference.

Both officers are on leave per department policy. TPD says the investigation is still on-going.

In 2006, Officer Kutchera was cleared by a grand jury of any wrong doing in another shooting.

In that incident, police said Diaqari Ball was mutilating himself with a sharp object after an accident. Then he was said to have chased another officer and made threatening motions before Kutchera shot him. Toxicology reports showed Ball had drugs and alcohol in his system.
