TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tallahassee man is behind bars on felony drug charges after police intercepted a package containing a pound of marijuana.
According to court documents, USPS inspectors were conducting a routine drug inspection on packages at the Tallahassee Post Office on Friday morning.
While conducting the inspection, they noticed a package that had a sender address coming from a place that was known for shipping drugs throughout the United States.
On Tuesday, inspectors along with Tallahassee Police wanted to investigate, so they decided to personally deliver the package.
Documents say the package was addressed to Fred Smith, however when they arrived at the home they ended up speaking with 36-year-old Johnathon Ross. Police say Ross told them that Fred Smith did live there, but was working and that he would accept the package for him.
Police told Ross that they were suspicious of the package. Ross then changed his story and said he didn't know anything about the package and that Smith doesn't live there anymore.
Documents say police asked if they could enter the home and Ross agreed.
Police asked Ross if he had any illegal drugs in his room and Ross admitted that he did have some for personal use.
Police say Ross showed them 57 grams of cannabis that he kept in a mason jar and a small plastic bag of cocaine.
After police found out about the drugs, they arrested Ross and continued to question him about the package. Documents say after previously denying knowledge of the package, Ross finally admitted that he knew the package was coming.
Ross told police that he ordered a pound of marijuana from a website. He told police that he paid $1,000 for the cannabis. Ross also admitted that he sells the cannabis to his "close personal friends" and smokes a lot of it as well.
According to court documents, Ross said he also bought the marijuana in the mason jar and the small plastic bag of cocaine.
After speaking with Ross, police continued investigating and found that the package Ross ordered contained 474 grams (or 1.04 pounds) of cannabis. They also found $2,624 in cash inside a safe in Ross's bedroom.
According to documents, Ross was transported to the Leon County Detention Center. He is being charged with marijuana possession with the intent to sell and possession of cocaine.
