TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Officials and students reacting after the FBI's 2016 crime statistics shows Florida State University had the highest violent crime count of any public college in the state.
The statistics are based on all offenses that were reported to local law enforcement.
It states FSU also leads in multiple crime categories including rape, property crime, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
While the statistics may be affected by a variety of factors to include the demographic of the surrounding community, ratio of male to female students, and size of enrollment, Florida State was ranked 2nd in every other category.
FSU Police officers say they want to use this as opportunity to encourage students to report if there is a crime and to keep the lines of communication open.
Students also shared their opinions on the report.
