HAVANA, Fla. (WTXL) - A local police department is warning citizens about a new scam targeting Hurricane Michael survivors on Facebook.

The Havana Police Department is warning residents about a scam that has been circulating the area recently.

They say they've received reports of citizen being contacted by scammers through Facebook. The scammers tell the victims that they have qualified for a grant that will remove hurricane debris from their property.

The caller then requires the victim to pay for the travel expenses up front and requests that the money be sent through Walmart MoneyGram or something similar.

Police ask that residents be wary of anyone offering services on social media.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are asked to call the Havana Police Department at 850-539-2800.
