TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- A Tallahassee police officer and a Leon County deputy are being called heroes after a grand jury finds their actions were justified in an ambush attack that left one deputy dead.

In November, Leon County Deputy Chris Smith was shot and killed on Caracus Court.

The grand jury Wednesday said there would have been more casualties during the attack against first responders if it was not for the direct actions of the officers.

Following Wednesday's session a "no true bill" was presented. According to the presentment "all the officers involved in this incident conducted themselves heroically and in accordance with their training and the law when confronted with Holley's senseless and violent actions."

Chief of Tallahassee Police Department Michael DeLeo was satisfied with the jury's decision.

"I appreciate the thought and process the grand jury put into it as they recognize the officers' actions that day and recognize the dangers all of our police officers and deputies go through everyday they come to work and how many of them act selflessly and egregiously on a day to day basis," said DeLeo.

The hearing Wednesday involved two parts. The first, was clearing the officers in the shooting. The second, making recommendations for the Consolidated Dispatch Agency, which is accused of mishandling the call that led to Deputy Chris Smith's death.
