ST. PETERSBURG, FL. (AP) - Officials say a St. Petersburg police officer ran over a man who was lying in the street after disappearing from a nursing home.

Police say 67-year-old Mark Duffy had been reported missing Monday from the Wirick assisted living facility. Early Tuesday morning, Officer Nicholas Lazzari was heading to a non-emergency call in his marked patrol car several miles from the nursing home when he ran over Duffy and dragged him a short distance.

The Tampa Tribune reports that the officer called for paramedics, who transported Duffy to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

Lazzari said he did not see Duffy, because the man was wearing dark clothing. It wasn't clear why he was lying in the middle of street.
